If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):

Whatever you decide do not ever get Norton, it will slow down and ruin your computer. The best anti-virus you can get is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).

You haven't listed Kaspersky or NOD32, which are better than all of those...
If I HAD to chose between them, I would probably pick Avast to be honest. McAfee and Symantec use too much resources and are very hard to completely uninstall. AVG has poor detection rates, and I have personally never used PC Tools so I can't comment on that.
If I had to chose a free AV right now, it would be Avira AntiVir PE Classic. If I had to chose a pay-for AV, it would be Kaspersky or NOD32.

Yes you still need an antivirus, you can use Threatfire alongside it as it works in a completely different way, as it alerts you to any virus or spyware (Threatfire free does not remove the viruses or spyware)!

AVG has poor detection rates. The free version does not come with the ewido engine that is part of the pro version. it doesn't shape up well against other free products, and should be avoided if you want to the best protection for your machine. Antivir is the best free one I know of. Don't take my word for any of this though, what Im telling you is not based on personal opinion. check out the comparisons here

However, you must register for avast!. I think both is very good, but avast is better because the features.

I have used both, they are both very good. As long as you have the signature file up to date. I find that avast is the best one for me, but when it is all boiled down it is a matter of preference. As long as you have your updates in order they are both as good as one another.

I personally recommend the Symantec products ( though I know there are many who can't seem to understand it so they think it isn't any good. ) Symantec/Norton is EXTREMELY reliable if you keep your definitions updated and use a firewall. Check if your firewall (if you have got one) is allowing AVG to access the net. AVG is an OK anti-virus, but there are better options like Avast (Home Edition) and AOL Active Virus Shield, both of which are also free.

That happened with my computer. You have to download the latest version of AVG. When you click the grey picture of it on your desktop, it should say "download newest version". Or, and pop sign from AVG should keep popping up to remind you to dowmload the newest version. When you click it, it will give you a link to download the other version.

AVG Antivirus by Grisoft is free for home use and is great. It hasn't skipped a beat yet. I had been using it awhile back and then Symantec pissed me off so I went back to it. Updates are quick and can be automated and same with scans. Full version.
Hasn't missed any of my viruses yet and I have had a few over the years.

Try the free trial of NOD32 from eset.com - it found 7 viruses on my computer that AVG and McAfee both passed by. I believe that $60 for a two year subscription was well worth the extra protection I'm getting.

First do you want to buy an antivirus or do you want to use a free version? If you want to buy one Nod32 is very good. It has top rated detection rates in various online tests. Something similar to it would be Kasprsky Antivirus or Avira's Premium Suite.
For free versions, I would recommend either Avast, Avira or Active Virus Shield (made by AOL but based on kaspersky engine).
An antivirus isn't a firewall, meaning it can't blobk outgoing or ingoing traffic. Windows Xp already has a firewall integrated but it isn't that great. Installing an auxiliary firewall application will improve your security status. Comodo and Zone Alarm are both free and very good.

NOD32 is by far the best. In tests it seems to get most vulnerabilities out there and reviews have said that it exceeds Kaspersky and AVG.
That being said, Kaspersky is also very good. But I use NOD32.

It depends on individual opinion. I will vote Kaspersky as the best anti-virus and Spyware Doctor as the best anti-spyware. Comodo Personal Firewall is the best firewall. BitDefender has the best internet security suite (overall protection).

Linux doesn't really need anti virus since it hasn't got formats such as .exe, it has strange formats and the only way to infect a Linux PC is through a java big because it has to be able to do java online. There isn't much need for one.
I read that ClamAV from SourceFire is the best for Linux.

I really don't think that any one anti-virus program, is better than the other. I have had, Norton, avg, and McAfee. I never got a virus, with any of them. It just is a personnel choice..If you watch the ads, from staples, you can get really good deals..I recently picked up the McAfee, security pack 2006, which cost $69.00 for regular price, and after I sent in all the rebates, I got it for free!!

Nod32 is the best. it uses very little memory, 2-5 megabytes of free ram on my machine, it updates the virus database sveral times a DAY, and it protects you against most spyware. It looks at all internet traffic, Microsoft Office documents, outlook email, and when your system is idel, it scans all files on it, when you come back it pauses, then when idle again, it picks up where you left off.

Most of the answers to your question are on target. The only one with which I disagree is the assertion that all AV software s****, and you really don't need it with Vista anyway. I think it's important to never be lulled into a false sense of security.

AVG is an antivirus so the computer will be free from CURRENT viruses. Make sure you keep it updated.
Zonealarm is a firewall. It keeps programs from calling home... unless you ok them to use the internet.
Don't forget spyware and adware and other kinds of software you install in the computer.

AVG is a poor antivirus and while zonealarm is good the two could conflict and cause problems on your computer. You would be better off to remove AVG and just use zonealarm.

Avira as suggested above is probably the best rated free antivirus' while Avast is also very good. Avira has a *slightly* better detection rate, but Avast has email scanning and the ability to do a boot -time scan and Avira doesn't. So they're both good, but choose only one.

Certain programs are known to cause cpu usage to top 100% if they run while the anti-virus is running. How old is your computer? Do you have any specs on it? It could be a lot of different factors.
Never run more than one antivirus program on your computer. Download free ccleaner, run check for problems and delete all it finds, than run the scan, it will free up lots of space, in the windows settings in the program check all down to advances and the one below.
i found the one that slows the pc down the least is avast home edition , get it at www.avast.com and look for the home edition, it is free. remember to delete any other anti virus as using more than one will cause problems

Hard to answer........all programs use resources, some more than others. AVG is pretty lean, so is AVAST. Super Antispyware is good. NOD32 is very lean and very good. Norton is a resource hog, overpriced, and needs an "upgrade" every year. Read this as meaning send us $. If you run an adequate amount of RAM, any program should not appreciably affect your machine's performance.

I've been using the free version of Avast! for the last 5 years and it has never let a virus through yet! It is stable and doesn't consume system resources as heavily as some of the well known paid-for AV programs.
It's always good to use a second AV program, such as AVG, and a couple of anti-spyware applications as well. This gives you more comprehensive protection.

I have AVG free, and have always had AVG free, but this message has not come up before. Why is it coming up now?
AVG now has newer versions out but they are no longer free. Often people have trouble running obsolete software. It's time to either upgrade to the new version of avg or find another security program.
Just go to the Control Panel -%26gt; Security and click on the "I have my own antivirus software..." to get rid of the message.

Most likely windows is not reconising as an anti-virus, and just another program.
You probably updated windows, the older versions of xp didn't check for an antivirus, it can be turned off if it really annoys you, it doesn't mean that AVG isn't working any more though.
Chech that you have not accidentaly deleted any important files of AVG.Check in Control Panel-%26gt;Add or Remove Programs-%26gt;AVG. If its there and still Windows shows the message then some files may have got deleted.Reinstall the app.
If you can see AVG in the bottom right corner,click to make sure its running,if not you may have to install it again( first unistall) !

one way is to use a usb memory stick and dnlaod the anti-virus file onto that, then put the stick into the windows usb port and install from the stick.

never use registry cleaner if you have moderate knowledge about computer registry. some registry cleaner will destroy your computer. You can defragment more frequently. i defragment my computer everyday.

i currently have two viruses in the Virus Vault of my AVG anitvirus free edition. what should i do with them? if they are in the vault, do they affect my computer? if i delete the viruses, will it delete the file that it was infecting as well? that makes me worried that i might lose an important file. i believe that there still may be viruses on my computer becuase of its slow speed for half an hour after i turn on the computer...

if the virus is in the vault..leave it there for a few days...if pc runs fine..then most likely u are ok and safe to delete...but yes...sometimes u can crash windows by removing files that were with virus.....while the virus is in the vault..it can not harm ur pc

Although McAfee is not so good as Norton (Norton can kill 96% of virus whereas McAfee only 93%), you should not use the Yahoo version of Norton.
Reasons
1. the Yahoo package is only a trial version for 30days
2. you may not be able to un-install that yahoo version of Norton. (You may have seen many complain in Yahoo Answer about that)
3. McAfee and Norton anti-virus are programs and they would hang up one and others due to software bugs. Hence only one is allowed to be active.
If you want better protection in against virus, you can buy a CD-ROM package of Norton. CD-ROM package is better than internet version because that CD-ROM can help you to recover and reboot your machine if it got serious infected.
My computer is seriously chugging lately, and all I have is an outdated version of Norton, so I'm sure I'm due for some better A/V software with ad/spyware busting abilities. Both Norton and MacAfee have on-access scans which will scan files as you open them to make sure they don't have viruses. A lot of people don't like this because it is very resource intense to constantly be scanning files for viruses and will significantly impact performance on the system. Also, these tools are not free. But remember, you generally get what you pay for. You could use some free antivirus software you find on the internet somewhere, but it may not provide the quality or ease of use as some of the non-free vendors. Think about it....

What restriction are you referring to?
Having two or more antivirus running may well slow down your system if both do real time scanning. Perhaps you can turn off autoscanning for AVG - use it (and any other antivirus/antispyware software) for on demand scan (meaning as and when you need it)
you cannot have more than one AV, I'm surprised your computer isn't locking up
having 2 antivirus programs running is not a good idea, they will try to block each other and slow the PC down. The best way to remove Norton if you want to stay with AVG is to load F-secure internet security trial version. It will completely remove Norton, the uninstall will not. F-secure can then be uninstalled after the trial or anytime you wish. Then reload AVG or Avast to stick with free antivirus.

it's a little late for this but i do suggest ghosting your system before you connet to any WAN. That way when something like this happens you can delete a partition, and put an identical image of your system with no troubles or worries just a little time.

I use all the following and have for a few years.
I found them on my own but later found the University Of Harvard Computer Science Division also recommends them. They are all free.
I have used them and Windows XP with SP2 and keep it updated.
I also use Internet Explorer for the browser with MSN toolbar with popups blocked.
Sense SP2 (Service Pack 2) came out I have not had 1 Single problem with any of my computers running all the programs listed and practicing safe computing. (knock on Wood) I can't guarantee the same results for you but that's what I use.

My subscription to Norton Internet Security is running out soon and was wondering is there any ones better value for money than Norton or just better in general as i need it for 2 computers in my home, even a good Free one for the time being ?
I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
It really depends on what operating system you have. So it is better to try the free ones available and choose the one that suits you best. Free edition is good and enough for homes,if you need it for an office, buy it.

I switched to AVG Free edition yesterday, and it seems better because I can find and remove more viruses. SBC didn't do anything that well and made my PC run slower. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
I've never used AVG but I find SBC works very well.
There are much much better ones out there. Adware is one. Look for freeware sites and read about what the programs do. SBC's antispyware is only a first, thin line of defense.

Absolutely, AVG free is top notch. So is CyberDefender Free 2.0. www.cyberdefender.com. I like the latter best as it scans more quickly and takes care of problems at the time they happen.

No there is no harm or conflicts as such, u can very well use two or 3 antiviruses at same time but only thing is the system performance , ur system performance will go down when u install more anti virus softwares
I believe having more than 1 AV will only make them crash and come up with errors you dont have, or they will find each other as viruses.
So you know though, BitDefender has been in the top 3 AV's for a few years now, I use it and have never ever had a problem.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

I use ad-aware and spybot search %26 destroy for anti-spyware software and then Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 12 for anti-virus %26 firewall and so far i've had my laptop for 4 months and it's been running great. Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)
I've used kaspersky and nod free trials, how do I delete the markers? I've deleted everything I can find, is it in the registry?

You could format your hard drive and reinstall windows and then put them on lol. Most trial programs put different files in different places to make it very hard to keep using trials over and over again. They're not that expensive and it's probably not worth it.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. I just installed System Mechanic Professional 7, but the windows security centre doesnt recognize the IOLO anti virus that is part of SM. Be fore this I had a free version of Avista anti virus and everything was fine. Every time I start up, I am asked for the permission to let the iolo components (Anti virus, fire wall) to start. what should I do so the system recognizes Anti virus?

I personally don't recommend the Windows Firewall. It just isn't that great. If it was, why would they have to put another one in OneCare their security package?
I strongly recommend the free Zone Alarm. It works better than the ones I have paid for. It blows the doors off of the firewall in OneCare that you can buy from MS.

choose search or find
